Why Seal New Concrete

After a new concrete driveway has been laid, it is highly recommended you apply a sealer a to help protect it from stains and preserve the appearance by reducing the risk of cracks caused by moisture.

By applying a quality sealer to concrete, you can help extend the life of the driveway as well as enhance its appearance.

Unsealed concrete is very porous and can easily absorb various types of liquids such as water and oil. When his happens, it can cause the concrete to become discoloured or stained. When fluids penetrate into the substrate, it can also cause concrete to gradually deteriorate, leading to chipping and cracks in the surface.

While it can be tempting to apply driveway concrete sealer soon after the concrete has dried, this is usually not a good idea.

Concrete is a mixture of cement, gravel or sand and water. There is usually excess moisture in the new concrete that needs to evaporate during the curing process, which can take around a month. Once the concrete has fully cured and all moisture has evaporated, a sealer can be applied.

If you were to apply a sealer to the concrete too soon after laying, it can create a barrier over the surface and trap excess moisture under the sealer. The sealer can delaminate from the concrete or discolour as the moisture makes its way out.

Once a new concrete area has fully cured and is ready to have a sealer applied, the first step is to clean the surface to remove any dust and loose particles. This will give the sealer a nice clean surface to adhere to and not be affected by any loose objects.

There are many different types of concrete sealers available on the market that are designed to be applied to a range of concrete surfaces. These also offer different levels of protection against moisture and stains as well as enhancing the look of the concrete.

Shalex Drive is a high-performance clear sealer that is well suited for use on new concrete driveways. Shalex Drive is designed to seal and protect the surface of concrete to help stop stains from spills, moisture, dirt and grime, keeping it looking great for years to come.
Once your driveway has been sealed, it’s important to care for it properly by keeping it clean. Regularly clear off any dirt and debris like leaves to reduce the risk of staining but be careful not to damage the sealer by using high pressure washers. It is best to keep a pressure washer nozzle directed well out in front of you to blast dirt away rather than aim straight down which can damage the surface and remove sealers.

To keep your new driveway or concrete looking great, it is recommended to re-seal the area every 18 - 24 months.
